Kansas traffic signs use shape and color so you can recognize the message quickly, even before you can read the words. Knowing them helps you react in time and answer these questions with confidence.
Shapes carry meaning
A red octagon always means STOP, and a downward-pointing triangle means YIELD. A five-sided pentagon marks a school zone or crossing, and a round sign warns of a railroad crossing ahead.
Colors carry meaning
Red means stop or prohibition; yellow warns of hazards or road changes ahead; orange marks construction and maintenance zones; green gives directions and distances; blue shows motorist services.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop and stay stopped; a steady yellow warns the light is about to turn red; a steady green means go if the way is clear. A flashing red works like a STOP sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
