Speed & Road Conditions
Speed limits are maximums for ideal conditions. Kansas expects you to adjust to weather, traffic, and the road so you always keep control and enough room to stop.
The basic speed rule
No matter what the sign says, you must never drive faster than is reasonable and safe for current conditions. In rain, fog, snow, heavy traffic, or work zones, the safe speed is often below the posted limit.
Following distance
Use the three-second rule in good conditions and add seconds when the road is wet, icy, or visibility is poor. More space gives you time to see and react to trouble ahead.
Wet, icy, and reduced visibility
Slow down on wet or icy roads, where traction drops. If you hydroplane, ease off the gas and steer straight until the tires grip again. Use low-beam headlights in rain, fog, or snow.
