Sharing the Road Safely
Kentucky roads carry motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and large trucks. Because these road users differ in size, speed, and visibility, sharing safely means giving space and looking carefully.
Trucks and blind spots
Large trucks have wide blind spots, or No-Zones, to the sides and behind. If you cannot see the driver's mirrors, they cannot see you. Avoid lingering there and never cut in close in front of a truck.
Bicycles and pedestrians
Treat bicyclists as vehicles: pass with plenty of room, changing lanes when possible, and only when safe. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and stay alert near schools and neighborhoods.
Night driving
Use high beams only where legal and safe, and dim to low beams within about 500 feet of oncoming traffic and 200 feet when following. Slow down at night because you can see less far than your stopping distance may require.
