Speed & Road Conditions
Posted limits are maximums for good conditions. Kentucky drivers must slow down for weather, traffic, curves, and hills, and keep enough space to stop.
Adjusting to conditions
When the road is wet, icy, or foggy, the safe speed is often below the posted limit. Reduce speed, increase following distance, and use low beams in rain, fog, or snow.
Following distance
Use the three-second rule in good conditions and add seconds when traction or visibility is poor. Space gives you time to see and react to hazards ahead.
Skids and control
If the rear wheels skid, ease off the gas and steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. Avoid hard braking, which can make a skid worse, and slow gradually.
