Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules keep intersections, roundabouts, and processions orderly. Louisiana law tells you when to yield and requires you to signal your intentions clearly.
Intersections and roundabouts
At a four-way stop, yield to the driver on your right when you arrive together. At a roundabout, yield to traffic already circulating and enter a safe gap, moving to the right (counterclockwise).
Signaling and turning
Signal at least 100 feet before you turn or change lanes. On a green light you must still yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk before proceeding.
Processions and emergency vehicles
Do not cut into a funeral procession, which has the right of way. Yield to emergency vehicles, and under the Move Over law change lanes or slow down for stopped emergency and service vehicles showing warning lights.
