Sharing the Road Safely
Louisiana drivers share the road with motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, and large trucks, often on bridges and elevated highways. Space and attention protect the most vulnerable road users.
Motorcycles and bicycles
Give motorcycles a full lane and extra following room because they are small and easy to miss. Pass bicyclists only when safe, leaving at least three feet of clearance.
Pedestrians and the Move Over law
Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and near schools. Under the Move Over law, change lanes away from stopped emergency or police vehicles with flashing lights, or slow down if you cannot move over.
Bridges and overpasses
Because Louisiana has many bridges and elevated roads, remember that these surfaces can ice over before the rest of the road in cold, wet weather. Slow down and avoid sudden braking or steering on them.
