Signs & Signals
Louisiana traffic signs use shape and color so their meaning is clear before you read the words. Signals and pavement markings work with them to direct traffic safely.
Shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and a triangle means YIELD. A yellow pennant marks a no-passing zone, a pentagon marks a school zone, and a round sign warns of a railroad crossing. Red prohibits, yellow warns, orange marks work zones, green guides, and blue lists services.
Regulatory signs
White regulatory signs give the law, including maximum and minimum speeds, lane use, and turn rules. You must obey them exactly, even when traffic around you does not.
Traffic signals
Steady red means stop and stay stopped (a right turn on red is allowed after a full stop unless prohibited); steady yellow warns of a coming red; steady green means go when clear. Flashing red is a STOP sign, and flashing yellow means proceed with caution.
