Speed & Road Conditions
Speed limits are maximums for good conditions. In Louisiana's frequent rain and fog, safe driving means slowing down, using lights correctly, and keeping space to stop.
Rain, fog, and headlights
Louisiana requires headlights from sunset to sunrise and whenever your wipers are in continuous use. Use low beams in rain and fog, slow down, and add following distance to prevent hydroplaning and rear-end crashes.
Hydroplaning and wet roads
If your tires hydroplane, ease off the gas and steer straight until they grip again. Avoid hard braking or sharp steering on wet pavement.
Following distance
Use the three-second rule in good conditions and add seconds in rain, fog, or heavy traffic. More space gives you time to see and react to hazards ahead.
