Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules keep intersections safe and protect pedestrians and children near school buses. Maine law tells you when to yield and includes a Move Over law for roadside workers.
Intersections and yielding
After stopping at a stop sign, yield to cross traffic and pedestrians before entering. At an uncontrolled intersection, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right when both arrive together.
Turning and school buses
When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians until it is safe. Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights on an undivided road, in both directions, until the lights stop and it moves.
Move Over law
Maine's Move Over law requires you to change lanes away from stopped emergency, tow, and maintenance vehicles displaying warning lights, or to slow down when you cannot move over safely.
