Sharing the Road Safely
Maine drivers share the road with bicycles, pedestrians, motorcycles, and large trucks, and must avoid distractions. Space and full attention keep the most vulnerable road users safe.
No hand-held devices
Maine bans using a hand-held phone or electronic device while driving. Use hands-free options or pull over safely; distracted driving is a violation and a common cause of crashes.
Bicycles and pedestrians
Leave at least three feet when passing a bicyclist and pass only when safe, crossing the center line if needed and clear. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and near schools and villages.
Large vehicles
Trucks and buses have large blind spots and long stopping distances. Stay out of their blind spots, and after passing do not pull back in until you can see the whole front of the truck in your mirror.
