Speed & Road Conditions
Posted limits are maximums for good conditions. Maine's winters and rural roads demand slower speeds, smooth control, and extra following distance.
Winter and slippery roads
On snow or ice, slow down, brake and steer gently, and greatly increase following distance. Do not use cruise control on slippery roads, and remember that bridges ice first.
Skids
If you skid, ease off the gas and steer in the direction you want the front of the car to go. Avoid hard braking, which can make the skid worse, and regain control gradually.
Following distance and visibility
Use the three-second rule in good weather and add seconds in rain, snow, or fog. Reduce speed when visibility is poor and use low beams in fog to avoid glare.
