Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules tell drivers who should proceed first, keeping intersections and merges orderly and safe.
Intersections and stops
At a four-way stop, the first driver to stop goes first; when two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. At an intersection with no signs or signals, yield to vehicles already there and to traffic approaching on your right.
Turns and roundabouts
When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians crossing your path. In a roundabout, yield to traffic already circulating before you enter, then travel counterclockwise and signal before you exit.
Emergency vehicles
When an emergency vehicle approaches with lights or a siren, pull to the right and stop until it passes. Maryland's Move Over law requires you to move over a lane or slow down for stopped emergency, tow, and service vehicles displaying warning lights.
