Signs, Signals & Markings
Signs, traffic lights, and pavement markings tell you the rules and warn of hazards on Maryland roads.
Sign shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards or changes ahead, while white rectangular regulatory signs, such as speed limits, state laws you must obey. Orange signs mark work zones.
Traffic signals
A steady red light means stop and stay stopped until green. A steady yellow warns the light is about to turn red. A flashing red is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution. A green arrow gives a protected turn.
Pavement markings
Solid yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, and a solid yellow line on your side means no passing. Broken lines may be crossed to pass or change lanes when it is safe. White lines separate lanes of traffic going the same way.
