Speed & Driving Conditions
Safe speed depends on the posted limit and on weather, traffic, light, and the condition of the road.
Speed and conditions
Never drive faster than is safe for conditions, even when you are within the posted limit. Reduce speed for rain, fog, ice, heavy traffic, curves, and darkness so you can keep control and stop in time.
Skids and stopping
If your vehicle begins to skid, ease off the gas and steer gently in the direction you want the front of the car to go, without slamming the brakes. Wet and icy roads lengthen your stopping distance, so leave extra space.
Visibility
Turn on your headlights at dusk, at night, and when visibility is poor, including in rain. Use low beams in fog, rain, or snow because high beams reflect off moisture and reduce what you can see.
