Alcohol, Drugs & Graduated Licensing
Michigan enforces strict impaired-driving limits and a three-level Graduated Licensing program for new drivers.
Blood alcohol limits
For drivers 21 and older the legal limit is a BAC of 0.08% or higher. Under Michigan's Zero Tolerance law, drivers under 21 can be charged at a BAC of just 0.02% or higher.
Graduated Licensing Levels 1 and 2
A Level 1 learner may drive only while supervised by a licensed parent or adult 21 or older in the front seat, after completing Segment 1 driver education. A Level 2 intermediate driver may drive alone but faces limits on late-night driving and on young passengers.
Level 3 and staying safe
After a violation-free period, a driver earns a full Level 3 license with restrictions lifted. Avoiding alcohol, distractions, and speeding is essential to keeping that license.
