Rules of the Road & Right of Way

Right-of-way and lane rules keep Michigan intersections, freeways, and work areas orderly and safe.

Intersections and turns

At a four-way stop, vehicles proceed in the order they arrive; when two stop together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. A left turn on a green light must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

Move Over law

When approaching a stopped emergency, police, or service vehicle displaying flashing lights, Michigan's Move Over law requires you to slow down and, when safe, move over one lane. This protects roadside workers and responders.

Merging onto freeways

Use the acceleration lane to match the speed of freeway traffic, then merge into an open gap. Do not stop at the end of a ramp unless traffic forces you to.
