Following distance
Keep at least a two- to three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and add more time in rain, snow, or heavy traffic. Extra space gives you time to see and react to hazards.
Blind spots and lane changes
Before changing lanes, check your mirrors, signal, and glance over your shoulder to check the blind spot your mirrors do not show. Move over only when the lane is clearly open.
Cyclists, motorcycles, and school buses
Give bicyclists and motorcyclists room and pass at a safe distance because they are small and can stop quickly. Stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights and stay stopped until the lights turn off.
