Signs, Signals & Road Markings
Signs, traffic lights, and pavement markings communicate the rules and warn of hazards on Michigan roads.
Sign shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP, and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards ahead, while white regulatory signs, such as speed limits, state rules you must obey.
Traffic signals
Steady red means stop and steady yellow warns the light is about to turn red. A flashing red is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines separate opposing traffic, and a solid white edge line marks the right boundary of your lane. A broken white line between lanes may be crossed to change lanes when it is safe.
