Speed & Road Conditions
Michigan's basic speed law requires a safe speed for conditions, which may be below the posted maximum.
Basic speed law
You must drive at a speed that is reasonable and safe for current road, weather, traffic, and visibility. The posted limit is the maximum for ideal conditions, not a target in poor ones.
Michigan speed limits
Unless posted otherwise, residential areas are commonly 25 mph, while most freeways are posted at 70 mph and some rural freeways higher. Always obey the sign posted for the road you are on.
Winter and wet roads
Snow, ice, and rain reduce traction and lengthen stopping distance, so slow down and increase your following gap. Brake gently and avoid sudden steering on slippery surfaces.
