Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules decide who proceeds first so traffic flows safely. In Mississippi you yield rather than force your way, and you give room to stopped emergency vehicles.
Intersections and stops
At a four-way stop, the first driver to arrive goes first; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. At an intersection with no signs, yield to vehicles already there and to the vehicle on your right.
Turning and yielding
When turning left, you must yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians in the crosswalk before you turn. Always signal your intention early so others can anticipate your move.
Move Over Law
When you approach a stopped emergency, law-enforcement, or utility vehicle showing flashing lights, move over one lane if you can do so safely. If moving over is not possible, slow down and pass with caution.
