Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe drivers manage space, stay visible, and protect the more vulnerable road users around them. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a three-second following distance in good conditions, and increase it in rain, fog, or on slick roads. More space gives you time to react if traffic ahead stops suddenly.
Motorcycles and school buses
Give motorcycles a full lane and extra space, and check your blind spots before changing lanes. Stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, and stay stopped until it withdraws them.
Seat belts and night driving
The driver and front-seat passengers must wear seat belts, and young children must ride in an approved child restraint. At night, dim your high beams for oncoming traffic and look toward the right edge of your lane to avoid glare.
