Speed & Conditions
Posted limits are set for ideal conditions. Mississippi's Basic Speed Law also requires you to slow down whenever the road, traffic, or weather makes the posted limit unsafe.
Speed limits
Mississippi posts a maximum of 70 mph on rural interstate highways, with lower limits on other roads and in towns. Always obey the posted signs, which may be lower than the maximum.
Basic Speed Law
You must never drive faster than is reasonable and safe for current conditions, even when that speed is below the posted limit. Adjust for traffic, curves, weather, and visibility.
Adverse conditions and merging
In rain or fog, reduce speed, increase your following distance, and use low beams. When entering a highway, use the ramp to match traffic speed and merge into an open gap.
