Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe drivers manage space, watch for vulnerable road users, and keep control of the vehicle. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and add time in rain, snow, or at higher speeds. Extra space gives you time to stop safely.
Bicyclists and school buses
Bicyclists may use the road; slow down and pass at a safe distance. Stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, and remain stopped until it withdraws them.
Seat belts and skids
The driver and front-seat passengers must wear seat belts, and young children must use approved child restraints. If you begin to skid, ease off the gas and steer gently in the direction you want the front of the car to go.
