Missouri traffic signs use shape and color to send a message quickly. Learning what each shape means helps you respond in time and answer these questions with confidence.
Shapes carry meaning
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. A five-sided pentagon warns of a school zone, and a sideways pennant on the left marks the start of a No Passing Zone. Yellow diamonds warn of hazards ahead.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop and stay stopped. A flashing red means stop, then go when safe, like a STOP sign. A flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution. Green arrows give a protected turn.
Pavement markings
A solid yellow line on your side means no passing there; a broken yellow line means you may pass when clear. When a solid and broken line are paired, only the side with the broken line may pass.
