Professional Development & Responsibility
This chapter covers scope of practice, safety, and professional conduct. Working within scope and prioritizing client safety are core responsibilities of a certified personal trainer.
Scope of Practice
Personal trainers design and coach exercise programs and offer general healthy-eating guidance, but they do not diagnose conditions or prescribe medical nutrition therapy or medication. When a client's needs fall outside that scope, the trainer refers to a qualified professional such as a physician or registered dietitian.
Safety and Emergencies
Trainers maintain a safe environment and follow an emergency action plan. Warning signs such as chest pain or shortness of breath call for stopping exercise immediately and activating emergency medical services rather than pushing through.
Ethics and Continuing Education
Professional responsibility includes honesty, confidentiality, appropriate boundaries, and ongoing continuing education to keep skills and knowledge current. Maintaining certification requirements supports quality and credibility.
