Program Design and the OPT Model

This chapter explains how to structure training programs using the NASM Optimum Performance Training (OPT) model and acute training variables. Program design translates assessment findings and goals into a plan.

The OPT Model

The OPT model has five phases across three levels: Stabilization (Phase 1), Strength (Phases 2 through 4), and Power (Phase 5). Programs typically build a foundation of stability before progressing to strength and then power, based on the client's goals and readiness.

Acute Variables

Acute variables are the adjustable components of a workout, including repetitions, sets, intensity, tempo, and rest intervals. For example, stabilization endurance training often uses higher repetitions (about 12 to 20) with controlled tempo, while maximal strength uses heavier loads, lower repetitions, and longer rest.

Progression and Periodization

Effective programs apply progressive overload and periodization, gradually increasing demands while planning variation to promote adaptation and reduce overtraining. Adjustments are individualized to the client's response, recovery, and goals.
