Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe drivers manage space, watch for slower road users, and keep control on rural and city roads alike. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and add time in rain, snow, or at higher speeds. Extra space gives you time to stop safely.
Slow vehicles and school buses
Farm tractors and other slow-moving vehicles display an orange triangle and travel well below normal speed; slow down and pass only with a clear, safe gap. Stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights and an extended stop arm until it withdraws them.
Seat belts and recovery
The driver and front-seat occupants must wear seat belts, and young children must use approved child restraints. If your wheels drop onto the shoulder, ease off the gas and steer smoothly back onto the pavement when it is safe rather than jerking the wheel.
