Safe drivers manage space, stay visible, and prepare for Nevada's long desert highways. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and add time in rain or at higher speeds. Extra space gives you time to stop safely.
Motorcycles and school buses
Give motorcycles a full lane and extra space, and check blind spots before changing lanes. Stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights and an extended stop arm until it withdraws them.
Desert and highway readiness
The driver and passengers must wear seat belts, and young children must use approved child restraints. On long desert stretches with few services, carry water, watch the temperature gauge for overheating, and keep enough fuel.
