Signs & Signals
Road signs, traffic lights and markings communicate the rules and warn you of what is ahead.
Regulatory and warning signs
White rectangular regulatory signs, such as speed limits, state laws you must obey. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards ahead, and a red-and-white triangle is a YIELD sign telling you to slow down and give the right of way.
Traffic lights
A steady red means stop and a steady green means go when clear. A flashing red means stop and then proceed when safe, while a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines divide opposing traffic; a broken yellow line lets you pass when clear, while a solid yellow line means no passing. White lines separate lanes going the same way.
