New Jersey enforces strict impaired-driving limits, a Graduated Driver License program, and a driver point system.
Blood alcohol limits
For drivers 21 and older it is illegal to drive with a BAC of 0.08% or higher. Drivers under 21 face penalties at a BAC of just 0.01% or higher under New Jersey's near-zero-tolerance rule.
Graduated Driver License (GDL)
New drivers earn full privileges in stages, moving from an examination or special learner permit to a probationary license. Under-21 permit and probationary drivers must display two red reflective GDL decals on the vehicle's plates.
Points and the knowledge test
Moving violations add points to your driving record, and too many points bring surcharges or suspension. The MVC knowledge test has 50 questions, and you must answer at least 40 (80%) correctly to pass.
