Rules of the Road & Right of Way

Right-of-way rules keep intersections, turns, and lane use orderly and predictable in New Jersey.

Intersections

At an intersection with no signs or signals, yield to the vehicle that arrives first; if you arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Always yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk.

Turns and roundabouts

When turning left on a solid green light, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians until it is safe. When entering a traffic circle or roundabout, yield to vehicles already circulating.

Keep right

New Jersey law requires you to keep to the right and use left lanes mainly for passing. Return to the right lane after you pass so faster traffic can flow.
