Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Defensive habits and space management help you share New Jersey roads safely with other users.
Following distance
Keep at least a two- to three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and increase it in rain, fog, or heavy traffic. More space gives you time to see and react to hazards.
Lane changes and blind spots
Before changing lanes, check your mirrors, signal, and turn your head to check the blind spot your mirrors do not show. Move over only when the lane is clearly open.
Motorcycles, bicycles, and school buses
Give motorcycles and bicycles a full lane and extra room because they are small and stop quickly. Stop at least 25 feet from a school bus showing flashing red lights, from either direction, until the lights turn off.
