Speed & Road Conditions
Speed limits set the maximum for good conditions; you must slow down when the road, weather, or traffic demand it.
New Jersey speed limits
Unless posted otherwise, the limit is 25 mph in school zones and business or residential districts, 50 mph on many suburban roadways, and 55 mph on rural roads. Certain interstates are posted at 65 mph, the state maximum.
Adverse weather
Rain, snow, and ice reduce traction and lengthen stopping distance, so slow down and leave extra space. At higher speeds on wet roads, tires can hydroplane and lose contact with the pavement.
Driving for conditions
The posted limit is a maximum, not a target. You must reduce speed for curves, work zones, poor visibility, and heavy traffic, even if that is below the sign.
