Signs & Signals

New Mexico traffic signs are grouped by shape and color so you can recognize them at a glance. Knowing what each one requires helps you react in time and answer these questions with confidence.

Shapes and colors

A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of a hazard or change ahead, and orange signs mark construction and work zones where you slow down and watch for workers.

Traffic signals

A steady red means stop and stay stopped. A flashing red light has the same meaning as a STOP sign: stop completely, then go when it is safe. A flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.

Regulatory vs. warning

Regulatory signs, usually white with black letters, tell you the law such as speed limits and turn rules. Warning signs, usually yellow, prepare you for curves, crossings, and other conditions ahead.
