Speed & Conditions
Posted limits are set for ideal conditions. New Mexico also expects you to slow down when weather, traffic, or the road makes a lower speed the safe choice.
Posted maximums
New Mexico posts up to 75 mph on rural interstates, with lower limits on other highways and in towns. Always obey the posted signs, which may be lower than the general maximum.
The basic speed rule
You must never drive faster than is reasonable and safe for current conditions, even when that speed is below the posted limit. Weather, curves, and traffic can all call for a slower speed.
School and work zones
Slow to the posted reduced speed in school zones during school hours and in construction zones, and be ready to stop for children, crossing guards, and workers.
