Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules keep traffic moving safely by making clear who goes first. You must yield the right of way rather than insist on it.
Intersections
At an intersection with no signs or signals, yield to any vehicle that arrived before you; if two vehicles arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
Turns and red lights
You may turn right on a red light after a full stop and yielding, unless a sign prohibits it; in New York City right turn on red is banned unless a sign permits it. When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians.
Roundabouts and school buses
In a roundabout, traffic flows counterclockwise and entering drivers yield to vehicles already in the circle. You must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights from either direction, even on divided highways, until the lights stop flashing.
