Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Defensive driving means anticipating hazards and giving other road users room. New York roads are shared with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and large trucks.
Move Over law
When you approach a stopped emergency, tow or maintenance vehicle displaying flashing lights, slow down and, when safe, move over one lane away from it to protect roadside workers.
Trucks and blind spots
Large trucks have big blind spots, called no-zones, to the front, rear and both sides. Avoid lingering beside a truck, and if you cannot see the driver in their mirrors, they cannot see you.
Seat belts and restraints
New York requires the driver, front-seat passengers and all back-seat occupants to buckle up, and children must ride in an appropriate child-restraint or booster system based on age and size.
