Traffic Signs & Signals
Signs, signals and pavement markings tell you what you must do and warn you of what lies ahead. On the New York test, at least 2 of your 4 road-sign questions must be answered correctly.
Sign shapes and colors
A red octagon is always a STOP sign, and a red-and-white triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards or changes ahead, orange signs mark construction and work zones, and white rectangular signs state regulations such as speed limits that you must obey.
Traffic lights
A steady red means stop and remain stopped; a steady yellow warns the light is about to turn red, so stop if you safely can. A steady green lets you proceed if the way is clear. A flashing red is treated like a STOP sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, while white lines separate lanes moving the same way. A solid line means do not cross to pass; a broken line means passing is allowed when it is safe.
