Speed & Driving Conditions
Speed must always match conditions, not just the posted number. Managing speed and following distance is central to avoiding crashes.
Speed limits
New York's statewide maximum speed limit is 55 mph unless otherwise posted, and some controlled-access highways are posted at 65 mph. New York City has a default 25 mph limit on most streets, and school zones may be lower when in effect.
Basic speed rule
Never drive faster than is reasonable and prudent for the conditions. In rain, snow, fog or heavy traffic you must slow below the posted limit if that speed would be unsafe.
Following distance and skids
Increase your following distance in poor weather because stopping distances grow on wet or icy roads. If you skid, ease off the gas, avoid slamming the brakes, and steer gently toward where you want the front of the car to go.
