Notarial Acts and Certificates
The acts an Indiana notary performs under Indiana Code Title 33, Article 42, how acknowledgments and jurats differ, and what a valid certificate must contain.
The authorized acts
Indiana notaries take acknowledgments, administer oaths and affirmations, perform jurats, and witness signatures. The notary must match the correct act to the document without choosing it for the signer.
Acknowledgment vs. jurat
The oath and the presence-at-signing requirement separate the two most common acts.
Personal appearance and remote acts
Every act requires personal appearance. Indiana runs a remote notarization program under set conditions.
The certificate
The certificate is the notary's official record of the act.
