Commission, Bond, and the Exam
Qualifying for and keeping an Indiana commission: eligibility, the surety bond, the eight-year term with continuing education, and the online exam.
Eligibility and term
Indiana sets basic qualifications and an unusually long term with ongoing education.
An applicant must be at least 18 and a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident.
The applicant must be able to read and write English.
The applicant must reside in Indiana or have a primary place of business or employment in Indiana.
The commission runs eight years, with continuing education every two years.
The surety bond
A bond protects the public over the long commission term.
Indiana requires a $25,000 surety bond.
The bond protects the public harmed by the notary's misconduct.
The notary must repay the surety for any claim paid.
The exam
Indiana pairs online education with a graded exam.
Applicants complete online education before the exam.
The exam has 30 questions, both multiple choice and true/false.
A score of 80% (24 of 30) is required to pass.
It is delivered online, not as a closed-book in-person test.
