Commission, Bond, and the Exam

Qualifying for and keeping a Nebraska commission: eligibility, the surety bond, the four-year term, and the written mailed exam.

Eligibility and term

Nebraska sets basic qualifications and a fixed term the notary must renew.

An applicant must be at least 18.
The applicant must reside in Nebraska, or be regularly employed within Nebraska while residing in an adjoining state.
The commission is valid for four years.
Property ownership and a law degree are not required.

The surety bond

A bond protects the public and must be filed before commissioning.

Nebraska requires a $15,000 surety bond from an incorporated surety company.
The bond is filed with the Secretary of State before the commission issues.
The notary must repay the surety for any claim paid.

The exam

Nebraska uses a mailed or emailed written exam rather than an in-person test.

The exam has 20 questions and is sent by mail or email after the application.
A score of 85% is required to pass.
An applicant has a limited number of attempts, with a waiting period after repeated failures.
It is not a proctored in-person test.
