Electronic & Remote Online Notarization
Ohio's Modernization Act authorizes online notarization (a form of RON) for notaries who obtain the additional online authorization and use approved providers.
Online notary authorization
To notarize online, an Ohio notary must first hold a traditional commission, then apply for online-notary authorization, complete any required additional training, and select an approved online provider. Online notarization uses real-time audio-video, identity proofing and credential analysis, and a tamper-evident electronic signature and seal.
Recording and retention
An Ohio online notary must keep a journal of online acts and retain the audio-video recording of each act for the period set by rule (generally at least ten years). These recording and journaling duties are mandatory for online notarizations, unlike optional journaling for traditional acts.
