Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules decide who goes first so that traffic flows safely and predictably.
Intersections and stops
At a four-way stop the first vehicle to stop goes first; if two arrive together, the vehicle on the right has the right of way. Always yield to pedestrians in or entering a crosswalk.
Turning and yielding
When turning left across oncoming traffic, wait for a safe gap and yield to oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. Signal your intentions early so other road users know your plans.
Roundabouts, buses and emergency vehicles
Yield to traffic already in a roundabout and travel counter-clockwise. Stop in both directions for a school bus with flashing red lights on an undivided road, and pull to the right and stop for approaching emergency vehicles.
