Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Sharing the road safely means keeping space, staying visible and watching for more vulnerable road users.
Following distance
Use at least a two-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and increase it in rain, snow or fog. This gives you time to see and react to hazards.
Cyclists and pedestrians
Leave a safe margin of at least one metre when passing a cyclist, and slow down near pedestrians. Watch for people stepping out at crosswalks, bus stops and in residential areas.
Blind spots and stopped vehicles
Signal and shoulder-check before changing lanes, because mirrors leave blind spots. Slow down and move over a lane where possible for emergency and service vehicles stopped at the roadside.
