Signs & Signals

Signs, traffic lights and pavement markings tell you what you must do and warn you of what lies ahead.

Sign shapes and colours

A red octagon is always a STOP sign and requires a full stop. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards or changes ahead, while orange diamonds mark construction and work zones where you should slow down and watch for workers.

Traffic lights

A steady red means stop; a steady green means go if the way is clear. A flashing red light means stop and then proceed when safe, exactly like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.

Pavement markings

Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, and a double solid yellow line must not be crossed to pass. White lines separate lanes travelling in the same direction and mark the edge of the road.
