Alcohol, Drugs & Ohio Licensing
Ohio treats impaired driving as a serious offense and phases in privileges for young drivers.
BAC limits
A driver 21 or older is legally impaired (OVI) at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher. Drivers under 21 face a lower 0.02 limit under Ohio's zero-tolerance policy.
Implied consent
By driving in Ohio you consent to chemical testing for alcohol or drugs when lawfully requested. Refusing a lawful test results in an administrative license suspension separate from any OVI charge.
Graduated licensing
Probationary drivers under 17 face nighttime driving limits (roughly midnight to 6 a.m.) with exceptions for work, school, or a parent. New teen drivers also face passenger limits during the first months of licensing.
