Safe Driving & Sharing the Road

Space, awareness, and courtesy toward vulnerable road users prevent most crashes.

Following distance

Keep at least a three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and increase it in rain, snow, or heavy traffic. Extra space gives you time to see hazards and stop.

Lane changes and blind spots

Mirrors do not show blind spots, so signal, check mirrors, and look over your shoulder before changing lanes. Move over only when the lane is clearly open.

Sharing with others

Give motorcycles a full lane and extra following distance because they are small and stop quickly. Ohio's Move Over Law requires moving over a lane, or slowing down, for stopped emergency and highway vehicles with flashing lights.
