Traffic Signs & Signals

Signs, signals, and markings tell you the rules and warn of hazards on Ohio roads.

Shapes and colors

A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards ahead, and a round yellow sign with an X and RR warns of a railroad crossing.

Traffic signals

A steady red means stop and a steady yellow warns that red is coming, so stop if you can do so safely. A flashing red is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means proceed with caution.

Pavement markings

Yellow lines divide traffic moving in opposite directions, and double solid yellow lines mark a no-passing zone. White lines separate lanes going the same direction and may be crossed when broken and safe.
