Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe drivers manage space, stay visible, and limit distractions. These habits prevent most everyday crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a two-to-four-second following distance in good conditions and increase it on wet, icy, or crowded roads. More space gives you time to react if traffic stops suddenly.
School buses and visibility
Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and stop arm out, and stay stopped until it withdraws them. In fog use low-beam headlights, not high beams, and slow down.
Distracted driving
Oregon prohibits holding or using a handheld electronic device while driving; only hands-free use is allowed, and even that should be minimized. Set your phone and route before you start.
